AHK-Cu (Alanyl-Histidyl-Lysine Copper) is a copper-binding tripeptide consisting of the amino acids alanine, histidine, and lysine complexed with Cu²⁺.
AHK-Cu is structurally related to GHK-Cu but differs at its first amino acid. Researchers have investigated AHK-Cu primarily for its interactions with human hair follicles, dermal papilla cells, cellular proliferation, and copper-peptide signaling.
AHK-Cu has been investigated in research involving:
The evidence base remains preclinical. The key published study used isolated human hair follicles and cultured human dermal papilla cells rather than treating human participants.
Researchers have investigated AHK-Cu for potential effects involving:
In a 2007 laboratory study, specific low concentrations of AHK-Cu increased the elongation of isolated human hair follicles and proliferation of cultured dermal papilla cells. Researchers also observed changes in molecular markers associated with apoptosis.
The dermal papilla plays an important role in regulating the development and growth cycle of hair follicles.
Because AHK-Cu demonstrated activity in dermal papilla cells and isolated human follicles under experimental conditions, researchers have investigated it as a tool for studying:
However, laboratory findings should not be interpreted as proof that AHK-Cu treats hair loss or produces hair growth in people. Controlled human clinical evidence specific to AHK-Cu remains lacking.
Although closely related, these are different research compounds:
AHK-Cu: Ala-His-Lys + Copper
GHK-Cu: Gly-His-Lys + Copper
GHK-Cu has a substantially larger research literature involving skin and extracellular-matrix biology. AHK-Cu’s direct published evidence is much narrower and focuses primarily on hair-follicle and dermal-papilla models. Evidence for one compound should therefore not automatically be attributed to the other.
